Kiwi millennials base holiday plans on how they will look on social media

A new survey focusing on the travel trends of New Zealanders has revealed 34 percent of millennials choose a holiday destination based on its photographic potential, with 13 percent basing their choice of destination on how good it will look on social media.

Travellers aged between 18 and 34 did take into consideration more practical (and important) reasons for choosing a holiday spot. The cost, weather and safety were the key factors.

The survey conducted by Budget New Zealand also revealed millennials are keen on a bit of action when on holiday. Nearly 50 percent said their ideal holiday would have to include adventurous activities, that's compared to just 18 percent of baby boomers who cared more about the weather.

Most loved road trips in New Zealand for millennials: 

  • Christchurch to Queenstown (47 percent) 
  • Auckland to Cape Reinga (46 percent)

Selfies aside, one factor remained important regardless of age or generation, holidays are about escaping the routine of day to day life.
