RECENT SHARK ATTACKS ON NSW NORTH COAST:

Oct 12 - A 25-year-old man drives himself to hospital after being bitten by a shark while surfing at Sharpes Beach in Ballina. All beaches in the area are closed for 24 hours.

Sept 26 - A 17-year-old boy is bitten on the upper leg by a great white shark while surfing at Ballina's Lighthouse Beach.

April 20 - A 12-year-old boy is bitten on the foot by a wobbegong shark at Main Beach Byron Bay.

Nov 10 - A junior surf champion is attacked by a suspected bull shark at Ballina's Lighthouse Beach. He suffered wounds to his left thigh.

July 31 - A 52-year-old former boxer fights off a great white shark by punching it in the face, after he was knocked off his board and bitten on the leg and hand at Evans Head.

July 3 - A surfer survives a brush with a shark after he is knocked off his board at Lennox Head.

July 2 - A 32-year-old bodyboarder is mauled by a four-metre great white shark at Ballina's Lighthouse Beach, suffering serious leg injuries.

June 24 - A 71-year-old is knocked from his surf ski by a three-metre shark while paddling 200 metres offshore at Belongil Beach, near Byron Bay.

Feb 9 - Japanese surfer Tadashi Nakahara is killed by a great white shark at Shelly Beach, near Ballina; it ripped off his legs.

Feb 8 - A surfer is suspected to be bitten by a shark in the buttocks at Seven Mile Beach near Ballina.

Jan 24 - A surfer is flung a metre into the air after his board is struck by a shark at Flat Rocks near Ballina. He survives without being bitten.

Jan 19 - A female surfer's board is snapped in two by a shark at Watego Beach near Byron Bay. She is unscathed.
