Three would-be burglars have alerted police to a large hydroponic cannabis set-up in suburban Melbourne.

Police were called to a two-storey home in Caroline Springs about 5am on Monday following reports three people were trying to break in.

Detective Senior Constable Shannon Symonds said neighbours heard loud banging sounds at the home and saw the trio trying to break through the front door.

When police arrived the would-be burglars were gone but police found hundreds of cannabis plants throughout the house.

"We believe these people were trying to steal the cannabis plants," Det Sen Const Symonds told AAP.

Police, who on Monday dismantled the set-up, believe there were more than 200 plants inside the home.
