Voters are almost evenly split over the prospect of paying more for renewable energy, polling shows.

The latest Newspoll, published in The Australian on Monday, shows 44 per cent don't want to pay anything for energy generated through sources such as wind and solar.

But the poll of 1622 people also found 45 per cent were willing, and nearly two-thirds of that number were open to paying about $100 a year more or less than $10 a month.
