Christmas is just around the corner, yet parts of Queensland's Darling Downs have briefly resembled a winter wonderland after hail blanketed towns across the range.

Killarney, about 200km southwest of Brisbane, looked more like the North Pole on Sunday as residents looked on in wonder at the white carpets of hail.

Delighted locals took to social media to share their videos and photos from Sunday's heavy rain and hail.

Dalby residents reported close to 100mm in rainfall, a welcome downpour as they prepare for summer.

One local just south of Dalby said they had "scored a whopping 105mm" in just under two hours and expected the grass to be looking "beautiful for Christmas".

Just north of Dalby at Bell, a storm swept through dumping hail and 75mm of rain in an hour.
