FEBRUARY 2014

* PM Tony Abbott criticises timing of an inquiry into children in immigration detention.

JULY 2014

* Immigration Scott Morrison brands allegations of cruelty towards children in detention centres by Triggs as "quite sensational".

AUGUST 2014

* Morrison and Triggs clash in heated exchanges at an inquiry hearing, during which a Liberal MP suggested she had exceeded her appropriate role.

NOVEMBER 2014

* Nationals Senator Barry O'Sullivan questions Triggs' timing of the inquiry during a Senate hearing.

JANUARY 2015

* Abbott labels as "pretty bizarre" a recommendation by Triggs that a Papuan refugee who killed his de facto wife be released from detention, adding that it showed "extremely questionable" judgment. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton called it "offensive".

FEBRUARY 2015

* Government dismisses a damning report into the treatment of detained asylum seeker children as redundant, not based on current circumstances and questioned its political motivation. Abbott labels it a "political stitch-up".

* Government backbenchers, including George Christensen, call for Triggs to stand down. The Greens say it's a witch-hunt and amounted to bullying.

* Triggs, while being grilled about the report by a Senate committee, reveals the Abbott government offered her other unspecified work in exchange for resignation.

* Abbott and Attorney-General George Brandis declares the government had no confidence in Triggs. Brandis accuses her of giving "inconsistent and evasive" testimony to a Senate hearing and a "fatal perception of bias"

* AFP asked to investigate Triggs' claim she was offered a job in exchange for her resignation. Abbott denies she was offered an inducement.

JUNE 2015

* Dutton calls Triggs a "disgrace" and demands she withdraw an "outrageous slur" linking Indonesia's refusal to negotiate on the death penalty to asylum boat turnbacks. He later denies bullying her and says she is ill-informed.

* Triggs accuses ministers of over-reaching their powers without legal scrutiny in a strident speech.

* Liberal Speaker Bronwyn Bishop suggests Triggs has demonstrated bias against the government during her tenure.

JUNE 2016

* A Queensland university student being sued over an allegedly racist Facebook post calls for an inquiry into the commission after it failed to notify him of a complaint against him for 14 months and seeks an apology from Triggs.

OCTOBER 2016

* Triggs claimed during a Senate inquiry that an interview she gave with a newspaper had been taken out of context and doctored. She later backflipped after the paper's editor revealed a recording of the interview.

* Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull criticises Triggs and the commission over its handling of the race hate-speech case involving the university student.

NOVEMBER 2016

* Turnbull confirms her contract will not be extended beyond mid-2017.
