Abbott not popular but effective: Credlin

Former Tony Abbott chief of staff Peta Credlin says her boss wasn't inherently popular but he was effective and over time his story will emerge.

She said the Turnbull government's problem was that it didn't actually have any achievements.

"Tony was never inherently popular. He was bloody effective but he wasn't popular," she told Sky's Andrew Bolt program.

"He won an election in a landslide, which I thought was one of his greatest achievements and to follow that up with two years of really heavy policy achievements, that's his great legacy."

Ms Credlin said Mr Abbott had been out talking up the government's progam.

"Any conservatives on my side of politics can look at Tony's example and perhaps take a little bit of heart that it's better than Labor and we have to get behind the government," she said.
