Fremantle Dockers player Shane Yarran has appeared in a Perth court charged over an assault allegedly involving a family member.

Yarran appeared briefly in Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with aggravated common assault and was released on bail to return to court on February 7.

The 27-year-old told the football club last month he would plead not guilty.

"An allegation of this nature is treated with the utmost seriousness by the club and we will continue to monitor the legal process closely," Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said.

"The club will not comment beyond this statement until the matter is resolved."

Yarran made his AFL debut in round 18 after being taken on by the Dockers as a mature-aged recruit.
