The father of a former Don Dale Youth Detention Centre inmate who claims he was abused behind bars says he's received a death threat.

Kenny Rogan is due to give evidence at the Northern Territory's royal commission into juvenile justice when it resumes in March.

The 14-year-old says he was allegedly stripped of his clothes with a knife by guards and locked in isolation for days in Darwin's notorious youth prison.

His father Colin Rogan says he received an anonymous phone call on Wednesday night from a man threatening to slit both of their throats.

"It's life threatening towards mainly my son," he told the ABC.

"When I asked the caller to come around and speak face to face, he told me he'd come around night time when we were asleep and kill the both of us."

Kenny Rogan was first sent to Don Dale aged 10 for a petty crime, but has since been released and is living with his dad.

Colin Rogan believes the threat was made because his son plans to front the inquiry, and says Kenny is now worried about sharing his story.

"It frightened the hell out of me and my son," Colin Rogan said.

NT Police are investigating the allegations.

"If need be, jail the person and see how he likes it on the inside," Colin Rogan said.
