Allison Janney, made famous by her role as CJ Cregg in NBC series The West Wing, has been recognised with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Joining the veteran performer for the ceremony on Monday were West Wing co-star Richard Schiff and Chuck Lorre, the creator of her current series, Mom.

Janney called the occasion an "extraordinary moment" and said she was "completely honoured".

The 57-year-old made her debut on Broadway in 1996 in a revival of the Noel Coward play Present Laughter and received a Tony nomination in 2009 for the original Broadway musical based on the movie 9 to 5.

On the big screen, she has had roles in acclaimed films including American Beauty and Juno.

Janney is probably best known as White House press secretary CJ Cregg on West Wing, a role that garnered her four Emmys.
