Amanda Abbington has opened up about her breakup from Martin Freeman - and how the new series of Sherlock was filmed just two weeks after their breakup.

The former couple - who reprise their role as on screen lovers Mary and John Watson in the fourth series of the BBC show - will be back together on New Year's Day and some of the scenes were tough to shoot.

She admitted while there were "pressure points" during the filming, she would love to work with her ex again in the future.

"Martin and I remain best friends and love each other, and it was entirely amicable, but we realised we'd come to the end of our time together," she said, adding that he sees their two kids as much as he wants.

"It is sad and upsetting, because you think you're going to be with someone forever, but you either do that or you break up.

Meanwhile, Martin has also opened up on filming and said it was still "interesting" working with his former beau.

"It’s always interesting doing stuff with your partner because you know each other better than anybody else and that was obviously still the case with this series."
