Andrews orders phone audit to find leaker

Victoria's premier is reportedly on the warpath over information leaked to the media.

Daniel Andrews told a cabinet meeting that auditors KPMG would check their phones to find out who gave 3AW details about police numbers, the Herald Sun says.

Opposition leader Matthew Guy says that would be unprecedented as there has never been a time where a premier or prime minister has searched their own ministers' phones.

"It is the most extraordinary circumstance that a premier distrusts his own ministers to the extent that he wants to search their mobile phones," Mr Guy told reporters on Tuesday.

A government spokeswoman said "the government does not comment on cabinet discussions".

Treasurer Tim Pallas was also reluctant to comment on the cabinet meeting, except to say he thought the premier was "a great guy".

"I make no comments on what goes on in cabinet and the principals of cabinet solidarity, of course, require that nobody makes comment," he told reporters.

HOW THE DETAILS ABOUT POLICE NUMBERS UNFOLDED:

* October 24 - 3AW reveals police numbers are set to increase

* December 1 - 3AW reveals specific details about the increase

* December 4 - Premier Daniel Andrews announces boost in police numbers
