ANZ has appointed Commonwealth Ombudsman Colin Neave to the newly created role of customer fairness advisor.

The lender says Mr Neave will assume the role early in 2017 and will be tasked with improving fairness of the bank's products and services for retail, small business and wealth customers in Australia.

"As a first step, Colin will help us establish our Remediation Principles so that we have a consistent set of standards we stick to when things do go wrong," ANZ chief executive Shayne Elliott said in a statement.
