A second man arrested over the fatal hit and run of a cyclist in Darwin on New Year's Eve has been released.

The 36-year-old man was arrested on Thursday, but has only been charged for criminal damage unrelated to the death of 46-year-old Jason McCormick.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Tony Henrys said he will appear at Darwin Local Court on January 24.

"Police are continuing to investigate this matter and are seeking public assistance to help identify a person who attempted to enter the Winnellie Hotel just after 9.30pm on New Year's Eve with three other people," he said.

It comes after another man, Wayne Abdul Sultan, faced Darwin Local Court on Thursday, charged with alleged driving offences that took place when police were forced to abandon a high-speed chase of the car believed to have killed Mr McCormick.

He didn't apply for bail and has been remanded in custody to reappear in court on January 31.

Mr McCormick had fallen off his bike near the Winnellie Hotel about 10pm on Saturday when a blue 2010 Toyota Aurion drove straight over him.

Despite the best efforts of witnesses, paramedics and police, he died from extensive injuries.
