A 16-year-old was among three males arrested after a large street brawl in Sydney's CBD.

The teenager and two 20-year-old men were taken into custody after a fight broke out between two groups of men on George St about midnight on Thursday.

Police said officers arrived at the scene to find the two groups fighting with "a large group of bystanders".

"We do believe alcohol was a factor," Acting Inspector Chris Breed told reporters on Friday.

One man was taken to hospital for stitches after suffering a cut to the back of his head.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage of the fight and are expected to lay charges against the three males.

Acting Insp Breed warned potential trouble-makers that police were out in force over Christmas and the New Year period.

"If you are going to act up and play up, we will deal with you quickly and swiftly," he said.

He said the brawl was not related to a fight between three men outside the Ivy nightclub on George St that broke out about 1.10pm.

A 29-year-old Sydney man was charged with assault after another man was hit in the face and knocked to the ground.

The man was due to face the Parramatta Local Court.
