Strike action by Australian Border Force staff at international airports across the country is expected to affect international flights later this week.

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection on Tuesday said Friday's 24-hour strike could also impact flights late on Thursday night and early on Saturday.

People travelling overseas have been told to arrive at the airport early to avoid delays.

CPSU national secretary Nadine Flood days the action will not compromise national security and safety and there are more than 50 agreed exemptions in place for areas such as counter-terrorism and intelligence officers.

ABF assistant commissioner Clive Murray said the department was working to minimise the impact on travellers as much as possible.

In a statement on Tuesday he said the department expected to be in a position to recommence negotiations with the union shortly.
