At least 51 civilians have been killed in air raids and shelling carried out by both government forces and opposition militia in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported said Saturday's airstrikes on opposition areas in Aleppo city and surrounding countryside killed 40 civilians. The Local Coordination Committees activist network put the toll in opposition areas at 45 dead.

State media and the Observatory say rebel shelling on government-held districts of Aleppo killed nine civilians, among them two children. State media said another 22 were injured.

On Saturday, the London-based NGO said a total of 277 civilians, including more than 100 women and children, have died since July 31 in clashes and attacks in Aleppo.

Aleppo has been the epicentre of clashes between government forces and rebels since 2012, when insurgents conquered large areas of the city, the second biggest in Syria and one of the most affected by the conflict.
