The federal government wants to turn military officers attached to embassies into more energetic spruikers for Australia's defence industry.

Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne sees a more expanded role for the attaches, including identifying market opportunities, helping companies achieve sales and advising on how the government and defence can best advocate for Australian firms.

"Our defence attaches play an important role in some markets in identifying opportunities and supporting those efforts and the government intends to ensure our defence industry is a focus of these efforts," he said in a statement.
