As federal government ministers prepare to say G'Day USA they're thrilled president-elect Donald Trump has given a fair dinkum job to an Australian.

Mr Trump has named businessman and Australian-US dual citizen Andrew Liveris as the head of the American Manufacturing Council, which will give the private sector's perspective to the incoming president and his economic team.

The Dow Chemical chairman and chief executive has held a range of business, government and academic appointments in both Australia and the US, including as co-chair of a separate manufacturing committee for President Barack Obama.

"It is outstanding to see such a qualified Australian as part of Mr Trump's team," Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said on Sunday.

Mr Liveris will also add another title to his lengthy CV, with Ms Bishop announcing he would join the ranks of G'Day USA champions.

The G'Day USA program, which runs in January for its 14th year, brings together prominent people from varied sectors including arts and business, to promote Australia in the US.
