Australia's Sarah Jane Smith shares the lead after the opening round of the LPGA Tour's Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Mexico City.

In her 11th season on the tour and still seeking her first win, Smith shot a five-under-par 67 with seven birdies to be tied on top with Spain's Carlota Ciganda.

They have a two-shot lead from South Korea Chella Choi, Frenchwoman Karine Icher and Mexican amateur Maria Fassi.

Young Australian tour rookie Su Oh is also on the leaderboard, tied sixth after a 70.

Smith and Ciganda played together on Thursday, with Smith joining a tie for the lead with five birdies on the back nine.

"I love playing with (Ciganda), she is so nice and we always have fun, so it absolutely makes a difference," said Smith.

A consistent performer, 32-year-old Queenslander Smith is near the end of arguably her best season.

While she has no top-10 finishes in 2016, she has had six results between 12th and 20th in her 26 tournaments - while missing only three cuts - to be 61st on the money list with $US267,858 in earnings.

Playing the penultimate event of the season, 20-year-old Oh has earned $US306,101 with two top-10 finishes, including a best of second in the Kingsmill Championship in May.
