Australian teenager Ethan Ewing describes his second placing in the prestigious US Open of Surfing as the greatest achievement of his short career.

The 17-year-old qualifier made the surfing world take notice when he defeated world No.4 Adriano de Souza in their semi-final at Huntington Beach to earn a berth in the decider.

Ewing then fell to Filipe Toledo in the final, with a combined wave score of 10.46 to the Brazilian's 14.90.

"This is the biggest achievement of my career so far and I'm just so happy and thankful for everybody who has supported me," Ewing said.

"Coming into this, I was just feeling really comfortable going up against these older guys and to make it to the final, I was expecting to make two or three heats, I'm blown away."

The North Stradbroke Island local earned $20,000 for his efforts as well as 8000 Qualifying Series points.

Ewing now sits at No.2 on the Qualifying Series, with the top 10 joining the elite World Surf League next year.
