Olympic champions Australia are safely through to the quarter-finals of the Dubai Rugby Sevens after topping the women's pool.

The Australians went through day one unbeaten, accounting for South Africa, Russia and the USA.

Australia aced pool A on nine points and will play France in the Cup Quarter Finals at 10.06 local time (5.06pm AEDT) on Friday.

Australian Women's Sevens coach Tim Walsh said his side was made to work for their victories.

"We got a bit of a wakeup call against some of those teams that took it to us, which will do us good moving forward into day two," Walsh said.

"I think France will be incredibly tough and we will need to be switched on to get the result."

The Australians had a 38-5 win over South Africa, with three tries to Emma Tonegato.

Alicia Quirk scored the opening try in their tight 20-7 win over Russia while Emilee Cherry starred in their 19-10 win over the USA.
