AUSTRALIANS IN BERLIN STUNNED BUT SAFE AFTER DEADLY TRUCK CRASH

- "I just saw this huge black truck speeding through the markets crushing so many people and then all the lights went out and everything was destroyed ... I could hear screaming and then we all froze. Then suddenly people started to move and lift all the wreckage off people, trying to help whoever was there ... There was blood and bodies everywhere." - Brisbane student Trisha O'Neill to the ABC

- "We were at the market where the truck hit maybe an hour before it happened, heard the sirens from the hotel room. Very sad for those that have died, but don't worry about us. Just deeply saddened by the loss for the families at this time of year - this will scar this city." - Brisbane couple Bo Nicholson and Emma Andrews

- "The four of us are safe in Berlin, now back in our hotel. Many thanks for all the messages checking on us. The Christmas markets have all been closed, but otherwise things seem pretty normal here, albeit a little sombre and on edge. Terribly sad for those involved." - NSW man John LeMarquand with wife Kathleen, son Harry and daughter Grace

- "We are both safe here in Berlin. A bit shaken up after seeing the news but safe in our hotel room. It's such a beautiful city and the Christmas markets bring so much positivity to the whole city that it is shocking some members of the human race could be capable of committing such an unthinkable act. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to all of the victims and their families and friends." - Melbourne couple Max Nolan and Laura Nicol

- "We are safe!! Just got back to our hotel room after visiting some of the Xmas markets in Berlin and we are watching the Sky News and see that a truck killed nine people and injured 50 at a Xmas market 300m from our hotel. RIP. Feeling grateful." - Gold Coast-based couple Sinisa Vucic and Lovella Stanford.
