Australia A are 5-302 at stumps on the first day of their four-day pink-ball clash with South Africa A at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

Victoria's Marcus Stoinis led with the bat on Saturday scoring 118 not out. New South Welshman Kurtis Patterson (74) shared to a 151-run partnership with Stoinis, strengthening Australia A's position after tea, following a slow start to the day.

Captain Peter Handscomb won the toss and elected to bat. Western Australia opener Cameron Bancroft clipped the first ball through square leg for four, but runs were hard to come by early, as South Africa's paceman including Vernon Philander quickly settled in.

Bancroft and 20-year-old opening partner, Matt Renshaw of Queensland, moved into the 20s, but the breakthrough came for the Proteas with Dane Piedt (1-10) tempting Renshaw (25) to hit over the top and inducing a miscued swipe that fell safely into the hands of Olivier at short third man.

Bancroft (34) was out a short time later, edging Philander behind leaving Australia A at 2-62.

Handscomb (4) was next to fall, early in the second session, caught by Stiaan van Zyl.

Glenn Maxwell failed to score, while WA's Sam Whiteman scored 35 before stumps were called.
