Australian comedians are punchlining above their weight at this year's Fringe festival in Edinburgh.

Three Australians are among eight comedians shortlisted in the Edinburgh Comedy Awards for Best Comedy Show and one Australian is among six nominations for Best Newcomer.

Nominated for best show are Heath McIvor's Randy Writes a Novel featuring the purple puppet Randy Feltface, Tom Ballard's The World Keeps Happening and Zoe Coombs Marr with her show Trigger Warning.

The other nominees were from the UK and Ireland.

Ballard was a best newcomer nominee at the Fringe last year and Coombs Marr was the winner of this year's Barry Award at the Melbourne international Comedy Festival.

Australian Nath Valvo is up for Best Newcomer at this year's Fringe with his show Happy Idiot.

Australian comedian Sam Simmons won the Edinburgh Comedy Award last year after being nominated three times previously.

Awards director Nica Burns said in a statement her hard-working judging team had made more than 1400 visits to shows among them.

"Congratulations to all the comics at the festival for a brilliant year of comedy," she said.

Each year Edinburgh's Fringe draws a large contingent of Australian performers including many comedians.
