Malcolm Turnbull has led tributes in federal parliament for Thailand's king Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died last week.

The king had been a friend of Australia and the prime minister said he sincerely valued the deep relationship between the two countries.

"At this time of national mourning, I extend to the Thai royal family and the people of Thailand the condolences of the Australian government and the profound sympathy of the Australian people," Mr Turnbull told parliament where the flag was at half-mast in respect.
