Australia, land of the fair go? Maybe not

Australians like to believe they live in the land of the fair go.

But shadow treasurer Chris Bowen says all the evidence suggests that's not the case and in fact Australia is fairly mediocre in providing opportunity.

He will use an address to the Chifley Research Centre on Tuesday night to argue the case for a five-yearly review by the Productivity Commission into the equality of opportunity being offered in Australia.

This would be a key priority for him as a Labor treasurer, much in the same way Treasury conducts a five-yearly intergenerational report to gauge the fiscal outlook over generations.

"Unless you measure something, it is very hard to improve it," Mr Bowen told ABC radio.

"We are a mediocre performer, we like to tell us we're not, politicians like to put 'land of opportunity' in all their speeches but we don't do that well."
