The latest super cuddly addition to Australia Zoo has been announced: A wombat joey.

Born on New Year's Day, the female joey has only emerged from her mother Poa's pouch in recent weeks.

From being born the size of a jellybean, the as-yet-unnamed joey now weighs in at 2.6 kilograms.

"At the moment she's doing what every baby does - eating, sleeping and getting used to her surroundings but she'll eventually be out and about with our other wombats for visitors at the Zoo to see," said Bindi Irwin.

The baby wombat has started snacking on solid foods, and has taken a particular liking to sweet potato.

Bindi says that in the coming weeks she'll go on play dates with the zoo's other wombats, and is expected to prove a handful given her "mischievous nature".

But, for the time being, she is enjoying being the centre of attention.
