Australian dad records Roxette for babies

A Sydney musician has caught the attention of Swedish popstars Roxette for his unusual treatment of their music.

Adam Alexander has taken 12 of the band's songs including The Look and Listen To Your Heart and given them a makeover by recording them as lullabies for children.

"Roxette's melodies are just perfect for this sort of treatment. So we took it down the path of 'let's put a piano to it, let's lace it with a pretty celeste'," Alexander told AAP.

While maintaining a healthy dose of respect for the original songs, Alexander re-worked them with the use of various, and sometimes unusual, instruments.

"I did some ukulele playing and guitar lines in there. I sampled a lot of toy instruments as well from my little girls' collection," he said.

His daughters, Matilda, 3, and Poppy, 11 months, have served as the inspiration behind the project.

"You're suddenly introduced to this whole world of baby products and it's massive," he said.

"As a new parent I did a little bit of digging around and there's an abundance of baby products and music and Beatles for babies and Bowie and all that stuff. As a Roxette fan I did a search and there was nothing, and that kind of surprised me a little bit."

Following Roxette's tour which took them to Australia in 2015, Alexander reached out to their management with the lullaby album idea.

"They've been incredibly supportive and have started to share stuff about the project as well which is wonderful," he said.

Alexander released the album this week and says it's already been charting and broke into the top 100 on the iTunes charts.

But he's found his greatest endorsement closer to home.

"Last night I went out to see the new Star Wars film and my wife texted me and said Matilda fell asleep within one song of the Lullaby Hits," he said.

"It was actually the track Go To Sleep, obviously an apt selection for the album."
