Australian sailors will be let loose in Fiji, in the latest move to improve once strained defence relations.

The sailors from navy landing ship HMAS Canberra will make a port visit to Fiji on their way back from the major defence exercise RIMPAC now being conducted off Hawaii.

Chief of defence force joint operations Vice Admiral David Johnston said Fiji appreciated Australian assistance following the disastrous cyclone in February and this visit would be an important step in building the relationship.
