A man who rolled a car near Daly River, killing a toddler, was unlicensed and may have fallen asleep at the wheel, Northern Territory police say.

Twelve people were travelling in a Nissan Pathfinder - seven adults and five children - about 16 kilometres from Daly River community when it crashed at about 2am.

"Early investigations suggest the driver may have fallen asleep before veering off the road, colliding with a concrete culvert and then a tree; the vehicle has then tipped onto its side," Acting Superintendent Janelle Tonkin said in a statement.

"It appears the deceased child was not restrained."

The 37-year-old driver was unlicensed and the car was unregistered.

Detectives continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The NT road toll is now 22, compared with 26 at the same time last year.
