Baird in Ballina to launch shark net trial

Premier Mike Baird will head to the state's shark hotspot to watch as nets are dropped into the water at five NSW beaches.

With the tick of approval from the Commonwealth, the six-month trial of mesh shark nets at Ballina's Lighthouse, Sharpes and Shelly beaches, as well as Lennox and Evans Head beaches, will get under way on Friday.

The legislation was fast-tracked through parliament following three shark attacks in the past six weeks. The proposal hasn't been popular with locals, however, who argue the nets could endanger other marine life, such as dolphins.

Mr Baird will be in Ballina to chat with local community groups, business owners and surfers, along with the net contractors.
