A man accused of threatening his three-year-old child with a gun after a dramatic police pursuit in Adelaide that ended with an officer shooting him remains in hospital ahead of a court appearance.

The 26-year-old has had surgery on gunshot wounds to his leg and arm, sustained when an officer fired on him as he sat in a car in Hindley Street on Monday night, in the heart of the city's nightclub district.

He is due to appear before a bedside court hearing on Wednesday charged with aggravated kidnapping, unlawful threats and acts to endanger life.

The drama began when the man allegedly kidnapped a 23-year-old woman and their daughters, aged seven months and three years, at a Cumberland Park address and drove off.

His car was later spotted and tracked by helicopter to the CBD where it roared down the Rundle Mall pedestrian shopping strip and through a police blockade, shocking nearby onlookers.

He was finally stopped on Hindley St about 11.30pm when the car was spiked and surrounded by police before they opened fire because of the threat to the child.

Officers then swarmed on the car, pulling the distressed woman from the vehicle and grabbing the baby and the girl.

Police say it will be alleged the man threatened the three-year-old girl with a firearm and that's when a decision was made for a police officer to fire.
