Belgian wins Vuelta seventh stage

Belgian rider Jonas Van Genechten has clinched the seventh stage of the Spanish Vuelta, in which Colombian Darwin Atapuma managed to remain as leader in the general classifications.

In an intense final sprint, which saw Spaniard Alberto Contador fall off his bike in the penultimate curve, Van Genechten completed the 158.5-km stage in three hours, 55 minutes and 44 seconds, beating Italian Daniele Bennati, who came in second, and Spaniard Alejandro Valverde.

The stage started in the small Galician municipality of Maceda and ended further to the south in Puebla de Sanabria.

Atapuma maintained the red jersey with an overall time of 25 hours, 41min and 21sec.

Valverde remains second in the overall classifications, hot on Atapuma's heels, with a difference of only eight seconds.

The reemainder of the top five is made up of Briton Chris Froome, 42 seconds behind Atapuma, and Colombian riders Nairo Quintana and Johan Esteban Chaves behind their compatriot.
