Bernardi not taking NY bombing personally

Cory Bernardi's arrival in New York coincided with a series of bombings.

But the outspoken Liberal senator - who's on a three-month secondment to the United Nations - isn't taking it personally.

The South Australian's "weekly dose of common sense" newsletter takes on a distinct travelogue tone on Wednesday as he details his first impressions of the Big Apple.

"What a welcome to New York," he writes.

"Three days after arriving, a series of bombings occurred in New Jersey and Manhattan. I am not taking it personally!"

His arrival, along with that of Labor senator Lisa Singh who is also doing the secondment, coincides with the annual leaders' week at the UN.

Senator Bernardi is impressed with the ease with which the city and its residents are dealing with the increased security and street closures the presence of world leaders brings.

"Streets are blocked off, barricades have been erected and still life goes on as if it's nothing unusual for New Yorkers," he writes.

"Despite only being here a few days, I get a sense that nothing much fazes New Yorkers."
