Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is doing her bit to prevent Australians travelling to battlefields in Iraq and Syria, cancelling around 180 passports, refusing to issue 24 and suspending a further 33.

Ms Bishop told parliament on Thursday about 110 Australians were overseas fighting with or supporting groups such as Islamic State, with as many as 65 killed.

IS posed one of the most immediate security challenges confronting Australia and recent terror attacks in France, Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia demonstrated it was a global, regional and domestic threat, she said.
