Police divers have found a body in their search of a makeshift lake west of Brisbane where a swimmer went missing on Wednesday afternoon.

A 21-year-old man was attempting to swim across Aqua Lake in Ipswich with another male when he became tired and disappeared below the surface about 4.30pm on Wednesday.

Divers found the body at 11.15am on Thursday, but have yet to identify it.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Aqua Lake is a disused quarry with many submerged hazards and is as deep as 40 metres in some areas.

Acting Inspector Brett Wendt said the advice he had from police divers is the water was "very cold" and likely to make swimmers cramp up.

A 16-year-old boy drowned in the lake in January.
