A contractor has been fined $30,000 after one of his workers was crushed under a collapsed trench in Queensland.

The man suffered a fractured pelvis and internal injuries after a rock wall broke away at the site in Coomera on the Gold Coast.

His boss Brian Douglas Roil pleaded guilty at Southport Magistrate Court to failing to meet his health and safety duties over the incident in September 2015.

"In this case, the defendant used a trench box but only shored softer soil, presuming the harder rock wall would be safe," head of Workplace Health and Safety Dr Simon Blackwood said.
