A 16-year-old boy who stabbed another boy outside a Gold Coast high school, leaving him with potentially life threatening injuries, will spend no time behind bars.

The 16-year-old boy was sentenced to 12 months' detention at the Southport District Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm, but Judge Katherine McGinness ordered he be allowed to walk free from court on a two-month conditional release order.

If he complies with that order, the boy will not spend any time in youth detention.

He stabbed another boy near Miami State High School in November 2015 following an argument between the pair on Facebook.

The father of the victim, who was 15 at the time, has hit out at the sentence.

"He gets to do some programs, which I understand may benefit his life, but the reality is he stabbed my son," the father told reporters outside court.

"They both knew they were getting together to have a fight ... but to stab someone as the first thing you do? Behave well, then you're free to go.

"I think they've got to be punished somehow. I can understand he needs to get on with his life but he nearly killed someone."

The court heard the offender, who was also 15 at the time of the incident, had taken a knife from a kitchen before meeting the victim.

After stabbing him, the boy then took the victim's backpack and threw personal items including a phone as well as the knife into a nearby canal.

For stealing those items, the boy was given 15 months' probation.

The court heard the victim's injuries from a stab wound, including a small laceration to his liver, were potentially life-threatening.

The victim said the impact from the incident had been devastating.

"It stopped me from working, sports, just general things," he told reporters.

"I'm not scared of him but I am scared it's going to happen again with someone else."
