A young boy struck by a car as he looked at Christmas lights near Brisbane remains in a critical condition.

The nine-year-old is in the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital after he was hit while viewing the lights with his family on Sunday night at Springwood.

The Forensic Crash Unit has been investigating whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Police say the 24-year-old man failed to negotiate a turn off Jardine Street and hit a parked car before striking the boy who was walking nearby.

He was questioned by detectives but has been released pending further investigation, police said on Tuesday.

One witness described the scene as "carnage" after the car went through a hedge and hit a water tank before crashing into a house.

"The most important thing was to get to (the boy) quickly," the male witness told Channel Seven.

"Thank goodness there were two registered nurses who were at the immediate scene."
