A taxi driver is being hailed a hero for helping save passengers from a blaze that killed a bus driver in Brisbane.

The 29-year-old bus driver died after he was doused in a flammable liquid and set on fire in an attack police believe was random.

A 48-year-old man was arrested at the scene and a murder investigation is underway.

Taxi driver Aguek Nyok kicked out the back door of the flaming bus after he heard passengers screaming to get out.

"I thought the driver would open the door for them but nah, I stood a few seconds and nothing was happening so I decided to do something about it," Mr Nyok told Nine.

"Everyone was shaking... I was just holding the door until the last one got out."

Eyewitness Clair Savage told Fairfax Media the taxi driver was a hero.

"I just said to him 'you just saved people's lives'," she said.

The fatal attack happened while the bus was stationary outside the Beaudesert Rd shops in Moorooka about 9am on Friday.

Eleven passengers have been treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.
