A bushfire has been controlled in Western Australia's South West region and is no longer threatening lives and homes.

A watch and act alert was downgraded about 1pm on Tuesday for people in the western part of Ferguson, in the Shire of Dardanup, with residents previously warned to leave or get ready to actively defend their properties.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services says there is a lot of smoke in the area and although the wind is not expected to change, residents should stay alert and monitor their surroundings.
