Bushfire threat means permits for Tasmania

Authorities have declared Tasmania's first summer fire permit period for swathes of the island state after having already battled a week-long blaze.

Tasmania Fire Service Chief Officer Chris Arnol said permits will be required from midnight (AEDT) Wednesday for all southern and northern regions including Hobart and Launceston, amid a string of high-fire danger days and a 3100-hectare bushfire northeast of the capital, now under control.

"Although we have generally experienced more moderate summer temperatures and higher than average rainfall, (we are) now seeing an increase in uncontrolled outbreaks of fire. Several fires have required significant resources to bring under control," Mr Arnol said, adding that it's important for landowners to continue hazard reduction burns and attain a permit to do so.
