Cadibarra 8 has taken line honours in one of the most closely contested Melbourne to Hobart yacht races in history.

The Paul Roberts-skippered boat trailed Lord Jiminy as the pair sailed up the Derwent River on Friday morning, but a shrewd tactical move saw them overtake and cross the finish line with a winning margin of just seven minutes.

"They were neck and neck all the way ... it's like they were tied together with an elastic band," race director Simon Dryden told AAP of the race that hugs the west coast of Tasmania.

"We thought Lord Jiminy had it, but they went for the west bank of the river and Cadibarra took the east where they got the wind.

"I don't think I've ever seen a race so close ... they've just been stuck together the whole way."

Lord Jiminy is co-skippered by Jamie Christensen and Chris Barlow, while Cadibarra 8 shared the load of the taxing 440-nautical-mile course around the southern tip of Tasmania between a crew of eight.

"They're very happy because they're brand new," Dryden said of the two-man crew on Lord Jiminy.

"They had a long campaign, but they loved the beauty of the west coast of Tasmania and the excitement of that competition."

The two boats crossed the finish line just after 7am AEDT on Friday but the rest of the 10-strong fleet are beset by light winds and will make Hobart approximately 18 hours after the leaders.

Pecadillo, skippered by Charles Meredith, claimed line honours in the Melbourne to Devonport yacht race in the multi-hull class, with the Douglas Lithgow-skippered Soiree Bleu securing mono-hull line honours in the boat's first-ever ocean race.

Both races got underway off Portsea on Tuesday morning.

Bare Essentials, skippered by Tim Pepperell, took line honours in the annual Cock of the Bay race on Boxing Day, setting a new multi-hull race record, with Dream taking line honours in the mono-hull class.
