Canberrans will dance the old year out and the new one in with The Potbelleez and several local acts at a free concert in the city.

The Irish-Australian dance music trio headlines the New Year's Eve in the City event, playing a set either side of the 9pm fireworks display.

Thousands of Canberrans are expected to watch the entertainment starting from 7pm with the ever-energetic Brass Knuckle Brass Band and continuing through the evening with the band Heuristic and DJ Nostalgia filling out the bill.

There is also the annual Bass in the Place high-energy dance party starting at 9pm, featuring Brisbane club scene favourites Odd Mob supported by DJs BNDR, Exposure and Tyson.

A second fireworks display will end the year with a bang at midnight.

Both events are alcohol and glass-free.

The weather is expected to be hot but clear of rain.

To help people get home safely, the Night Rider bus service will run every 10 minutes from major bus stations across Canberra until 2am.

The government has partnered with ride-sharing service Uber to give all Night Rider patrons $10 off between 11pm and 2.30am to help them on the last leg home after catching the bus.
