A man is dead after being found in the hallway of a Hobart hotel suffering multiple stab wounds.

The victim, aged about 30, is yet to be identified by police who were called to the Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel close to Hobart's waterfront about 1.45pm on Friday.

A staff member found the man, who died a short time later after being rushed to hospital by ambulance.

Inspector Adrian Bodnar was unable to confirm if the man had been a guest at the hotel but said CCTV footage could prove vital in the case, which is yet to be declared a murder investigation.

"From what we know, he was seen on CCTV footage uninjured a short time - about 40 to 45 minutes - prior to being found injured," the detective told reporters at the scene.

Police found an "edged weapon" at the scene.

"We're keeping an open mind as to the circumstances that have led up to the gentleman's death," the inspector said, adding that police have no suspect in custody.
