Charlotte, Oliver top Vic baby names list

Monarchists rejoice - Britain's Princess Charlotte is still inspiring Victorian parents when it comes to baby names, unlike Australian politicians.

Oliver topped the 2016 list for boys' names for a third straight year, while Charlotte won for a second year running following the princess's May 2015 birth.

"There are names which are clearly heavily influenced by social trends, and by the royal family, particularly with the girl's name Charlotte being so high up the list," Attorney-General Martin Pakula said in Melbourne on Wednesday.

"Clearly politicians aren't setting the agenda. I've noticed the name Malcolm is completely absent from the top 20."

Mr Pakula noted his name also wasn't among the top boy's names.

"I'd like to suggest that Martin should be given strong consideration moving forward, it's a name that's never really been in fashion," he said.

Mr Pakula noted that the first names of Premier Daniel Andrews, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and local MP Hong Lim were also absent from the top 20.

Ava and Mia are both in the top 20 for 2016, and Mr Pakula said old-fashioned names had made a comeback at the expense of names popular in the 1960s and 70s, such as Mark, David, Michelle and Jennifer.
