Having a drink on the beach is now legal at one place in Australia: Fremantle.

Bathers Beach House has been granted a liquor licence after a more than a six-month wait for approval.

Co-owner Anthony Unmack says having food and drink services on the beach offers something unique to Australia.

"You can experience this in Europe and Asia and this move now brings us up to par with what is almost expected of an international destination," he said on Thursday.

It's otherwise illegal to drink at the beach and other public areas of WA, with maximum fines of $2000.
