A faulty valve has caused an ammonia leak at an Ingham's chicken factory north of Adelaide prompting the evacuation of workers.

An estimated 50kg of the hazardous chemical leaked into the Burton factory early on Monday, the Country Fire Service said, though an Ingham's spokeswoman said the actual amount leaked is thought to be far less.

About 25 firefighters went to the facility to help isolate and deal with the leak, which took about an hour.

Ingham's said in a statement the six workers at the site were checked over by emergency services as a precaution but none were harmed in the incident.

They said the factory was cleared for operation and would run as normal on Monday

The leak happened in a part of the factory that was undergoing maintenance.
