The national holiday road toll has climbed to 20 with the death of a motorcyclist in the NSW southern highlands.

Police say the male motorcyclist collided with a ute on the Hume Highway south of Bowral around 3.20pm on Thursday.

He died at the scene.

The death takes NSW's holiday road toll to seven, while Victoria has recorded six deaths since the toll period began last Friday.

Queensland has recorded three, and South Australia and Western Australia two each.

The ACT, Northern Territory and Tasmania have not recorded any road deaths.

There has been one fewer death on Australia's roads compared to the same time during the holiday toll period last year.
